Super 25 additions

St. Viator: Wright State recruit Trey Calvin has returned from a hand injury. The Lions kept their heads above water without him, but they are one of the area’s better teams at full strength.

St. Rita: The Mustangs are back. They dominated Leo on Friday and have won nine of their last ten behind Javon Cooley and Jeremiah Oden.

Thornton: Tai Streets’ squad has won nine consecutive games since losing to H-F.

Dropping out

New Trier: The Trevians lost to Niles North on Friday. That alone probably wouldn’t be enough to knock them out, they’ve been very consistent this season. But guard Sam Silverstein is injured and done for the season and Harvard recruit Ciaran Brayboy is recovering from a concussion.

Corliss: The Trojans weren’t quite able to hang with Orr in the second round of the Public League playoffs. They are still a major threat in the Class 2A state playoffs.

DePaul Prep: The Rams remain one of the better Class 3A in the area and Perry Cowan is a reliable, top-notch guard but they haven’t picked up a quality win in 2019 and lost at Brother Rice on Sunday.

The week ahead

-The Public League playoffs are in high gear. The quarterfinals are Tuesday and Wednesday, the semifinals on Friday and the title game is on Sunday at Chicago State. All eight of the top ranked Public League teams are still alive.

-St. Rita has a massive week on tap with games against Mount Carmel, Providence-St. Mel and DePaul Prep.

-Friday is loaded with big games including Marian Catholic at St. Viator, Homewood-Flossmoor at Bolingbrook, Oak Forest at Hillcrest and more than a dozen other matchups around the area.

U must be really dumb to think they should not be ranked. I don’t care how many losses they have they have played the hardest team in the Chicago area and is a very solid team. I went to watch them with my dad and they are better than there record. And Marian vs vitor in the U watch Marian win and better be in the top 5

  • albert sledge

I must agree how is simeon even rank with two more wins then their lose, and theirs other teams with way better records. I don’t care what class your in , you cant tell me ever year since derrick rose this school has produce some of the best players in Chicago public ledge without recruiting .

  • Aaron Janovsky

How the heck is Proviso East not ranked? Smh. If refs allow them to apply that suffocating defense they are hard to beat.

    • Pirateship

I guess Willowbrook should be ranked now since they beat Mighty Proviso East…lmao!!!

    • 50 year alum

That is so true Aaron last week when PE played Hinsdale South the referees called 4 fouls against Proviso in the first 57 seconds of the game. They are not well liked by refs how can you expect a team to play its normal game of pressure defense when you are taken out of your game plan in the first minute? Here’s a bigger joke after the 3rd quarter of the game that’s 24 minutes Hinsdale South had a. Total of 5 fouls. The officials won’t let them play D A couple of weeks ago at the MLK tourney at Marshall Proviso played team from Minnesota they were beaten badly but during half time of the game I witnessed refs talking one in particular said to the other refs mocking the way Proviso w.a.s playing defense there is such a bias poor attitude towards them you could see in that game they were not gonna get any calls from that ref. No excuse for them losing that game goes to the refs but to mock the way a team plays behind their backs was so disgusting it kind of makes you think how bias they are. They play hard but when you have no big man this is the way they must play to be competitive. This week against Willowbrook the same thing the refs let Willowbrook play football against East dirty cheap shot that refs let go. So when you say they aren’t allowed to play suffocating defense you are so correct!

  • 43 Year Leyden Alum

Paul Cappetta Downers South was destroyed twice by Proviso East. What Planet you on? If anyone should be ranked it should be Proviso East

    • hsbball fan

Leyden Alum…you must be combining both totals and dividing by two 15+7=22/2 is 11. No one would ever consider an 11 point or 7 point loss is even close to “destruction”. The truth is, they beat them twice…I’m liking Proviso East, but what’s up with your new math? My bad…you did say Leyden Alum.

      • 50 year alum

Yeah hsbbfan my friend is a little zealous the 15 pt win was at DGS and it really wasn’t that close. The 7 point win was at East was a bit closer DGS came in a little cocky but got the cocky knocked out of them. The comment made by Paul was a case of not really knowing what a weak schedule DGS played. But I think he knows now The only top 25 team they played was York. With a win tomorrow East wins the gold nice to see you appreciate Proviso unlike anyone from the sun times.

St. Laurence needs to recover with wins this week. Play St. Ignatius and Brother Rice this week.

New Trier plays Evanston at home.

  • Paulie

St Laurence -overrated. A bunch of nobodies on St. Laurence. If it wasn’t for Jeremiah Williams, they would be at the bottom…lmao!!!

What in the world MOB? I get it, losing Silverstein is a devestating blow for NT, but even without him they are still a top 25 team. They are 22-4 with losses to #1, #4 and #7… and then the most recent 4 point loss to NN without their two best players.

  • Paul Cappetta

Downers Grove South 19-6 after a 1-4 start deserves consideration.

    • 50 year alum

Hey Paul have you once looked at their cream puff schedule Nazareth,Metea Valley, Glenbard East Maine West Crane Medical plus all the bottom teams in gold division those are the majority of their wins Proviso East beat them twice 63-48 and 68-61 you don’t realize their coach books those teams to boost their record they are an average team that doesn’t belong anywhere near the top 25 if you want to compare schedules with Proviso East go ahead we have played 5 public league teams and also played in Proviso West Christmas Tourney not the Jock Tosh I’m just stating facts East has played 4 teams in the top 25 how many has DGS played only 1 that being York who didn’t even win the silver when you book teams with a sub 500 record they should win those games go to max preps or 8 to 18 and look at their schedule.

  • George Chiropolos

I am loving New Trier. Win or lose they have had one of their best seasons in a decade. Coach Fricke is one of the best.

    • hsbball fan

George, at the risk of coming across like the “Cheeto” in La Casablanca wife’s southern border visit jacket…I really don’t care, do u?

  • chris

These are the real deal top 25 from MO.

    Best of the Rest:

    New Trier 22-4, 7-2
    Waubonsie Valley 22-3, 4-2
    Chicago Latin 20-2 , 11-0
    Riverside-Brookfield 22-4, 9-1
    Fremd 18-4, 8-1
    West Aurora 23-4 , 15-0

DePaul, Leo, Mt. Carmel, and Brother Rice all in the hunt.

  • Casey

If Marian beats st vitor Friday they better be in the top 5. They have played tough competition. Ahron Ulis. Joe green, Chris white most understated players in state
