Markese Jacobs made history tonight. The Uplift senior drained 22 consecutive free throws, which ties the all-time state record for one game.
Jacobs missed his 23rd free throw, which would have set a new record. He was 25 for 26 overall. The 25 free throws is the fourth most in state history in one game.
It was just a terrific game. Jacobs was tremendous, he scored 46 and was a total ballhawk on defense with eight steals Young stepped up at then end to win 103-100. The best game I’ve seen so far this season. Read all about it.
After the game I asked Jacobs if he was still thinking about winning Player of the Year.
“I’ve done me research,” Jacobs said. “You have to win something for POY and if you aren’t leading your team to big victories and tournament titles there is no way you can make it,” Jacobs said. “My goal now is to just finish my senior year out strong.”
Jacobs is right. In nine out of ten seasons the Player of the Year has to do some serious winning. But I don’t think he should give up hope just yet. I haven’t seen anyone play better than Jacobs this season, and that matters.
Wednesday’s top games
No. 13 Lincoln Park 73, Marshall 66: Nice win for the Lions. Tavis Stampley is becoming a consistent force. The senior had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Julio Montes added 18 points and Ish Habib had 16 points and five boards.
Carmel 55, Mundelein 50: The Corsairs win the battle of Mundelein.
No. 16 Orr 66, North Lawndale 61: Another big game for newcomer Sherif Kenney. He had 28 points and nine rebounds. Greg Outlaw added 18 and 10 and Tujautae Williams scored 15 and 11.
Farragut 66, Prosser 63: All due respect to Joe Henricksen, but the Red-North/West is clearly the best conference in the area. The Red-South/Central is loaded at the top but every single game is up for grabs in the North/West. There isn’t a bad team in the conference.
Northridge 57, North Shore 30: Ryan Menocal scored 17 and Northridge is 13-6.
Austin 87, Kelvyn Park 25: Dominant win for the Tigers. Sophomore Andrew McCline had 18 points and junior Mario Lloyd added 16 points and nine blocks.
Lane 64, Crane 48:Johnny Colombo led the Indians with 14 points. Lane is starting to look like a good bet to stay up in the Red, 4-3 in conference now.
Westinghouse 64, Wells 47: The Raiders sent me a clever invite to this one on Twitter, but I couldn’t pass up Young at Orr. Devin Davis had 18 points for the Warriors.
Clemente 70, Legal Prep 41: This gets the Wildcats over .500. The future is bright on Division St. Underclassmen led the way. Soph Terrell Taylor had 24, soph Trey Spires added 15 and junior Daeshaun Adams scored 19.
Jones 72, Collins 58: Senior Stefan Rosich had a big night with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Senn 99, Chicago Math and Science 57: Noah Chatman did it again. The senior broke the 50-point mark. He had 55 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
No. 21 Stevenson 50, Warren 38: The Patriots are living up to Super 25 status so far.
