Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Jan. 10, 2019

There was a pretty impressive crowd at Brooks tonight. The Eagles had plenty of parents on hand and a loud student section, just a great feel in the gym overall for a weeknight game.

Brooks has all the ingredients necessary to become a powerhouse someday. This season’s team was much better than I expected. Junior guard Isaiah Tolbert and senior Pierre Poindexter both looked like college prospects. Poindexter says that no schools have expressed interest in him yet, but if he keeps playing the way he did tonight that will change. He earned the notebook photo.

I was at the game to get a look at Ag. Science senior Kyle Rowan. He had a really rough three quarters and then totally came to life in the fourth quarter. Fun game, great ending. The win puts Brooks in the driver’s seat in the White-South.

Thursday’s top games

Dunbar 82, Phillips 59: We’ve been monitoring the Mighty Men all season long, they are the White team I have most wanted to see. It will happen eventually. Ishmael Martin had 28 points and Tyrese Scurlock added 18 points and eight rebounds.

No. 9 Simeon 76, Hyde Park 51: The Wolverines win it. Leonard Thomas stepped up and coached for Robert Smith, who is taking two games off for health reasons. Kejuan Clements had 12 points and nine assists. Antonio Reeves added 25 points and six rebounds and freshman AJ Casey had a big game with 13 points, 11 rebounds and a two blocks.

Glenbard East 71, Streamwood 57: A pair of juniors had nice nights. Daron Hall scored 18 and Alijah Nelson had 17.

South Shore 49, Julian 34: Junior Andrew Steward posts a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) to lead the Tars. Senior Mike Shelton added 12 points, five steals and five assists.

Solorio 89, Hubbard 85 2 OT: Another great game in the White tonight. This is the firs time the Sun Warriors have beaten Hubbard in three years. Sophomore Donovan Jones had 26 points and seven rebounds. Amarion Fields scored 23 and Aubrey Aaron had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Solorio is 11-6.

No. 1 Curie 77, No. 25 Kenwood 66: The host Broncos kept it respectable, which is an accomplishment against the Condors. DaJuan Gordon scored 17, Ramean Hinton had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Justin Harmon added 16 points and eight rebounds. Trevon Hamilton ran the show again with 11 points and eight assists.

No. 5 Morgan Park 77, Vocational 54: Nice road win behind Marcus Watson’s 18 points and Adam Miller’s 17.

North Chicago 65, Grayslake North 58: The Warhawks are just 5-10 this season, but do not forget about them. Plenty returns from last season’s team that advance to Peoria and Class 3A is wacky.
