Batavia needed its star quarterback to step up after trailing by 10 entering halftime against St. Charles North, and that’s exactly what senior Jack Meyers did to run away with Player of the Week honors for Week 8 of the 2018 season. The Bulldogs rallied from a 17-7 deficit at the break behind three touchdown passes from Meyers to earn a 27-24 victory on Friday in St. Charles.

Nazareth playmaker Michael Love, who racked up yardage in a big win over Joliet Catholic, and IC Catholic running back Kyle Franklin, who continued his breakout campaign with another strong effort in a win over St. Francis, are this week’s runner-ups.

Meyers, one of Batavia’s experienced leaders, struggled in the first half against a St. Charles North defense that had not allowed more than 14 points to an opponent in five weeks. It was the most tested the Bulldogs had looked all year, and facing a talented opponent on the road, their unbeaten record was on the line.

However, Meyers got Batavia rallying in the third quarter with back-to-back touchdowns to take a 21-17 lead, then responded after throwing a fourth-quarter pick six to toss the game-winning touchdown with 12.8 seconds left. He finished the game with 153 passing yards and three touchdowns to help Batavia win its eighth straight game.
