Mount Carmel senior Alek Thomas was selected by Arizona in the second round of the MLB Draft, 63rd overall, on Monday.
Thomas, a 5-11, 175-pound centerfielder, hit 40 home runs in his high school career. He’s also a football star for the Caravan. Thomas has signed with Texas Christian. He intends to play baseball and football in Fort Worth if he doesn’t sign with the Diamondbacks.
MLB.com ranked Thomas as the 41st best prospect in the draft, so he had hopes of being drafted in the first round. Thomas’ dad Allen is the White Sox director of strength and conditioning.
Mount Carmel graduate Josh Stowers was drafted on Monday as well. Stowers was a senior at Louisville this past season. He was selected 54th overall by Seattle.
