Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Feb. 10, 2018

Just another day in the 2017-18 basketball season. The No. 9 team lost to an unranked team and it was pretty much expected.

St. Viator played pretty well today and Marist definitely turned in its worst performance that I’ve seen so far. The RedHawks need Morgan Taylor to play at a ridiculously high level if they are going to beat very good teams. The Lions are kinda dominating the East Suburban Catholic this season. Seems likely they will join the Super 25 tomorrow.

Tonight’s top games

Lincoln-Way East 70, Westinghouse 62: The Griffins grab a win behind Sam Shafer (23 points) and Joey Buggemi (15 points). It’s been a really rough year for the Warriors, who are just 5-18.

Andrew 73, Bradley 43: Senior point guard Dan Gierhahn does it again, scores 32 to lead the Thunderbolts. Andrew has a very interesting matchup on Tuesday when it hosts St. Laurence.

Leo 63, Montini 37: The Lions are on an 11-game winning streak. Malcolm Bell scored 23 and Fred Cleveland added 19 points and seven assists.

Brother Rice 52, DePaul Prep 45: Another ranked team goes down. The Crusaders are one of those teams that has had drastic highs and lows this season.

Oak Park 61, Downers Grove North 46: This is a big win for the Huskies. They clinched at least a share of the conference title and are trending in the right direction.

St. Charles East 63, Waukegan 49: Zach Robinson scored 20 and Justin Hardy added 17.

Niles North 58, Prospect 40: The game was tied at 17 at the half. Damari Franklin and Jamal Stephenson each scored 14.
