Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Feb. 10, 2018

Marist's David Daniels (13) dunks in the second half against St. Viator as the Redhawks fall 54-49, February 10, 2018. | Allen Cunningham/For the Sun-Times.

Just another day in the 2017-18 basketball season. The No. 9 team lost to an unranked team and it was pretty much expected.

St. Viator played pretty well today and Marist definitely turned in its worst performance that I’ve seen so far. The RedHawks need Morgan Taylor to play at a ridiculously high level if they are going to beat very good teams. The Lions are kinda dominating the East Suburban Catholic this season. Seems likely they will join the Super 25 tomorrow.

Read all about St. Viator’s win over Marist.

Tonight’s top games

Lincoln-Way East 70, Westinghouse 62: The Griffins grab a win behind Sam Shafer (23 points) and Joey Buggemi (15 points). It’s been a really rough year for the Warriors, who are just 5-18.

Andrew 73, Bradley 43: Senior point guard Dan Gierhahn does it again, scores 32 to lead the Thunderbolts. Andrew has a very interesting matchup on Tuesday when it hosts St. Laurence.

Leo 63, Montini 37: The Lions are on an 11-game winning streak. Malcolm Bell scored 23 and Fred Cleveland added 19 points and seven assists.

Brother Rice 52, DePaul Prep 45: Another ranked team goes down. The Crusaders are one of those teams that has had drastic highs and lows this season.

Oak Park 61, Downers Grove North 46: This is a big win for the Huskies. They clinched at least a share of the conference title and are trending in the right direction.

St. Charles East 63, Waukegan 49: Zach Robinson scored 20 and Justin Hardy added 17.

Niles North 58, Prospect 40: The game was tied at 17 at the half. Damari Franklin and Jamal Stephenson each scored 14.

Let me say this , if any of u saw the games Marist lost with the exception of champagne central, it was all due to coaching, I watch a lot of h.s basketball and I’m gonna say Nolan is toooooo predictable , this is 2018 now , u can’t keep doing the same thing u were doing 10 yrs ago. U have to put kids in a position to win and he is not doing that, The Taylor kid should always have the ball in his hands because he will make the correct play , it just seems as though Nolan only cares about getting his 20 wins, u can clearly see it when u r at the games watching, he has NO CLUE, and it’s sad especially for the kids that want to win and learn. Marist needs a new coach

Marist gets 20 wins because they play a really weak non conference schedule. They don’t even need a coach to win most of those games (no offense Ag Science).

  • Mr HS Basketball

Wow is all I can say. I can remember in December one of the writers wrote that Adults should be Adults well writers should write exactly what happen even if it means calling out a coach. The writers have no issue with saying there peace about how players play what type of school they should go to but nothing when a team has 3 losses the same way with no adjustment. I am a fan of good basketball but some kids are getting horrible deals with the coaching they are getting. Marist vs Benet the Marist coach got out coached period. St Rita vs Marist out coached period I didnt catch the last lost to far for me but Im willing to bet same thing

Mike O wants to still rank Benet, Marist , and Marion Catholic higher than St. Viator and the St. Viator Lions have beat all these teams! St. Viator is winning the East Suburban Catholic conference; therefore , they should be ranked ahead of Benet, Marist, and Marion Catholic.
To do otherwise would be a joke and huge insult to the St. Viator team and coach! Let’s see

check it out, Benet has a 10 game winning streak and Mike O loves win streaks so look for Benet to move into top 10 ahead of St. Viator

Marist never should have been in the top 10. Viator had better wins going into the game. Marist needs to move out of top 20 how many ranked teams have they beat?

    • James

Great stuff chris. Marist win over MC doest impress me too much based on their recent loss. Naperville north beat west aurora by 15 with only 2 losses. But i think they are ranked properly. Its really wide open after top 5

Marist beat Marian Catholic which is huge win. What teams do you want to put ahead of Marist at #15?
