Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Jan. 12, 2018

Loyola's Connor Barrett (25) makes two points over Cody Spencer (4) Friday 01-12-18. Worsom Robinson/For the Sun-Times.

First look at Loyola and DePaul Prep for me this season. The Ramblers were rock solid, really controlled the second half of the game.

Perry Cowan was excellent, he’s one of the area’s best scorers. The Rams play a pretty slow style, so he doesn’t have the big numbers some other players do but he’s scoring a tremendously high percentage of his team’s points.

It’s likely Loyola gets into the Super 25 on Sunday. They are red-hot, playing very good defense and shooting well. Read all about it.

I have been reading about the amazing game in St. Charles that has been featured on ESPN and now Deadspin. The coach for North seems to complain about the officials a lot; I wasn’t at the game since I was at New Trier. But this man is saying the second half was in favor of East yet his team outscored East 15-2 in the third quarter.

Tastes like sour grapes to me but was anyone there to give an account of how “unfair” this loss was. Great example for the kids, coach.

Lance Jones is certainly one of,if not the most all round guards in 2019 in our state. This isn’t new to those that have followed him for years on the AAU circuit, but now your starting to see him breakout and assert himself.
Hevk of a game last night.

An amazing night of rivalry basketball. I was in the sold-out Trevians Gym to see my Wildkits pull one out thanks to pure guts and determination in as hostile environment as you will find on the North Shore. And now we are in first place, amazing.

But that St. Charles ending topped our drama. North v. East has been one of those matchups you hear about, though I have never made the two-hour drive out there to see it. What a night for those fans to see such an ending. It’s what makes high school hoops the purest form of entertainment. You can’t beat it
