Marist’s David Daniels (13) grabs a rebound and a put-back basket as the RedHawks defeat Marian Catholic 53-47, January 11, 2018. Allen Cunningham / for the Sun-Times.

Marist hasn’t been flying under the radar. The RedHawks have been pretty well-covered for the past couple months and Morgan Taylor’s rise to prominence is one of this season’s bigger stories.

But after watching Marist handle Marian Catholic fairly easily tonight in Chicago Heights I’m starting to wonder just what the ceiling is for the RedHawks. It’s probably higher than I initially thought.

Marist is just so solid. Taylor is a force and the Redhawks rebound, play defense and don’t rely on the three-pointer and don’t turn the ball over. It is a formula that is pretty dependable.

Marian Catholic is probably a year away from being a serious contender. The Spartans are clearly already one of the area’s top 20 teams this season. But they could be a major threat next year, they are loaded with juniors.

Tonight’s top games

Simeon 76, Hyde Park 42: The Wolverines coast. Zion Young scored 17. Talen Horton-Tucker had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Corliss 60, Ag. Science 50: The Trojans grab a win, but the score probably shows that all of those folks on Twitter wondering why they aren’t ranked need to pump the brakes a bit. Kobe Mapp had 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Didn’t see and stats for George Conditt.

Curie 65, Kenwood 41: Tyree Martin had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Maurice Commander scored 13.

Morton 56, Downers Grove South 45: Another interesting win for the Mustangs. Stephon Jordan had 13 points and eight rebounds and Vinny Belcaster scored 15.

Morgan Park 74, Vocational 71 OT: Ok, I just said that Corliss probably doesn’t deserve to be ranked because it played a close game against Ag. Science. So what does this score say about Morgan Park? The Mustangs have been given the benefit of the doubt in a lot of ways. Cam Burrell had 17 points and 24 rebounds and Adam Miller scored 19.

Lindblom 75, Harper 18: Quite a score. Jalen Carter led the Eagles with 23 points and Marshun Williams scored 16. Junior Shamar Humphrey added nine points and 10 assists.

Perspectives 81, Bowen 53: Davarius Huggins had a triple-double with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Waubonsie Valley 44, Geneva 43: The Vikings get upset.

Joliet Central 64, Oswego 54: The Steelmen pick up a conference victory. Oswego only has one win this season but the Panthers have been playing closer games lately. Ryan Saunders led the way as usual with 21 points and nine rebounds.
