St. Rita and Conant lose tonight so they should drop down to 19-20 area.
WWS loses to Naperville Central tonight so they should be out of top 25

    • BBall fan

I think they both drop in the rankings, but Rita should be higher than Conant. Conant lost to unranked Barrington last night. St. Rita lost to #16 DePaul. I think you need to factor in they both got into the rankings for winning their holiday tournaments. And Rita beat two ranked teams (Bolingbrook and DePaul), but none of Conant’s tournament wins were over ranked teams (at the time Br. Rice was not ranked).

  • Leegs1

I believe Niles’ opponents have a total of about 70 losses! Not a very stellar schedule to be ranked so high, in my opinion.

  • chris

    Collaborated top 25:

  • Steveo

Batavia has a tough game against St. Charles East tonight.

  • Leegs1

I believe Springfield Central lost by two to Bellville West. Not too shabby!

  • B Max

Orr will be City Champs. Simeon looks good but I think Orr outpaces them. And then Dominate the 2A playoffs. Adding Chase Adams to a team that brought everyone back from last year will show in the City playoffs. They look strong.

  • John B

Interesting how some losses impacted certain teams more than others. WWS lost twice to good teams and hardly moved. Romeoville lost twice to good teams and went from top 10 to out of the rankings. Romeoville has also beat a team that WWS lost to.

Naperville North and Marist both lost to good teams. Marist went from 20 to 13 Naperville went from 11 to 23. Neither has great wins, but I would say Marist doesn’t as good of wins. Their best is probably St Lawrence by 3 points. Naperville North beat Lawrence by 30. I have no problem with Naperville being moved to 23 because they lack big wins, but Marist does not deserve the big move up for playing Champaign Central close.

    • chris

Good point on Marist with only 1 loss and no big wins against top 25 teams. Where would you place them?

      • John B

They should be around 20 or so. I don’t think they did anything to move up.

        • chris

How about Fewick with 4 loses and 1 to Benet? They have have beat Brother Rice and Bogan. How about Hillcrest with 4 loses? Lost to Uplift, MarianCatholic, Young and Romeoville. Beat Bogan
How about Marian Catholic? with 2 loses – lost to Lincoln Park and St. Viator. They beat Waukegan, H-F 2x, St. Rita, Hillcrest

        • chris

If top 9 are 1. Simeon 2. Curie 3. Orr 4. Niles North 5. Morgan Park 6. Young 7. OPRF 8. Bolingbrook 9. Lincoln Park
          Then which teams do you have for 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16

          • chris

            10. Fenwick 11. Marian Catholic 12. Hillcrest 13. Conant 14. St. Rita 15. DePaul 16. Evanston 17. Marist 18. North Lawndale 19. Leo

  • Sammy

On the real, I got no problem with 5 of the first 6 teams ranked being CPS teams. Lets face it, Proviso West and Pontiac are the top 2 tourneys, and who wins those every year? (CPS teams). Throw in the Dipper with MP winning that. When it’s money time (March) the teams from York, HC and the other tourneys won’t be around long. This is proven every year. Even Haters have to give it up.

  • chris

After considering each team’s strength of schedule, quality wins, and loses:
    1. Simeon 2. Curie 3. Orr 4. Niles North 5. Morgan Park 6. Young 7. Oak Park 8. Bolingbrook 9.Lincoln Park 10. Marist 11. Fenwick 12. North Lawndale 13. St. Rita 14. Conant 15. Marian Catholic 16. Evanston 17. DePaul 18. Libertyville 19.Leo 20. Hillcrest 21. Joliet Central 22. WWS 23. Naperville North 24. Brother Rice 25. Batavia

    • John B

Good example of why this is so hard for Mike. You moved Naperville north ahead of Batavia and they lost to Batavia.

      • chris

        John B,

I agree, impossible to get these ranking perfect at this time in the season. Naperville North was 10 and how low do you want to drop them. Only 1 loss , not much competition for NN so far

      • chris

St. Rita beat Bolingbrook and they are ranked behind Bolingbrook because St. Rita has 7 loses. There are upsets. Have to look at the total body of work and strength of schedule and quality wins and loses also.

      • chris

Lincoln Park upset Young and they are ranked behind Lincoln Park. Have to also look at significant wins and number of loses and against who. The entire body of work up to this point in time. All teams should be honored with a “good” complete and comprehensive look.

  • CARL

#SCHURZ BULLDOGS ….RECORD BETTER THAN 12 TEAMS ON THIS RANKING, AND ALMOST TOOK THE DEKALB TOURNAMENT . UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE,WON CONFERENCE LAST YEAR🤔

    • James

the team that beat them at dekalb only has 2 losses and is not ranked. They need a tougher schedule to be considered.

  • chris

    Be Real,

Where should St. Rita be fairly ranked? Lincoln Park went from unranked to #10 so same should be done for St. Rita at least or better from unranked to #10 or even a little higher. #9 sounds about right. Then these ranks change over next 2 weeks

    • James

St rita has 7 losses. Everyone seems to forget that quickly. Some of thoses losses are pretty bad. Providence? Yes maybe top 15, but not top 10 with 7 losses…

      • chris

Ok that sounds reasonable and makes sense. 1. Simeon 2. Curie 3. Orr 4. Niles North 5. Morgan Park 6. Young 7. Oak Park 8. Bolingbrook 9. Lincoln Park 10. Marist 11. Fenwick 12. North Lawndale 13.St. Rita 14. Conant 15. Libertyville 16. Leo 17. Hillcrest 18. Marian Catholic 19. DePaul 20. Evanston 21. Brother Rice 22. Batavia 23. Naperville North 24. Joliet Central 25. WWS

        • Be real

Arguably beating Romeoville don’t seem to hold as much weight so I’ll say Marian and Evanston have better wins than Leo also Naperville North is way better than #24.

          • Be real

Referring to your last ranking and not actual

          • chris

fine Tuning continues: 1. Simeon 2. Curie 3. Orr 4. Niles North 5. Morgan Park 6. Young 7. Oak Park 8. Bolingbrook 9. Lincoln Park 10. Marist 11. Fenwick 12. North Lawndale 13.St. Rita 14. Conant 15. Libertyville 16.Marian Catholic 17. Evanston 18. Naperville North 19. Leo 20. Hillcrest 21. DePaul 22. Brother Rice 23. Batavia 24. Joliet Central 25. WWS about as fair as can be to ALL teams? Many more games to play – we honor and inspire all teams to be play as best they can and reach their full potential. ALL of us are works in progress for sure!

    • Be real

14, 15 is fair…good wins, but 7 loses…Eventhough Lincoln park lost to the brook and Rita beat them 7 losses are hard to swallow…

      • chris

St. Rita plays DePaul at home this friday. They lose vs. DePaul at home they will drop from 13-15 area for sure. They win, and they will stay. plenty of games left to play

  • Rogers Park Guy

Uplift is a really good team but they keep losing games they should be winning they will Be In the hunt come post season

  • Mike M

    DePaul University (that is)

  • Mike M

    Simeon could probably beat DePaul.

  • MEANSTREET NATION

St. Rita is stocked with talent and competitive spirit. They have earned their ranking with good play.

Simeon is a powerhouse and is rightfully #1.

  • chris

    1. Simeon 2. Curie 3.Orr 4. Niles North 5. Morgan Park 6. St. Rita 7. Bolingbrook 8. Young 9. Oak Park 10. Marist 11. Lincoln Park 12. Fenwick 13. Conant 14. North Lawndale 15. Libertyville 16. Leo rewards the winners and the runner ups as priority

    • Be real

Can’t go from unranked to #6 in no sport, no state, not ever!

      • chris

        1. Simeon 2. Curie 3. Orr 4. Niles North 5. Morgan Park 6. Young 7. Oak Park 8. St. Rita 9. Bolingbrook 10. Lincoln Park 11. Marist 12. Fenwick 13. North Lawndale 14. Conant 15. • Love BBall

Teams who have an easy conference schedule who are ranked early should be careful when entering these Holiday tournaments and have to play against real competition. You get exposed!!!

  • Leegs1

Mikey: how bout Champaign Central close loss to Bellville? Looks like you were right on with Simeon the last several weeks. I think Niles and Oak Park are rated too high and Hillcrest too low, but it’s pretty much Simeon number one then, whoever, after that. Thanks for coverage and hope you had a few last night!

  • CSL Fan

The CSL league with NN leading the way, by winning the Wheeling tourney had a decent showing by Evanston, Maine South, Glenbrook South in the holiday tournaments they played in. New Trier stumbled a lil bit and fell outta the Super 25 rightfully so. Evanston may have only finished in 5th place but reports are even though their young they are solid with Lance Jones, Blake Peters, Jaheim Holden leading them. Clayborn at NN is the leader of that team hands down, look for those two teams to battle it out for the CSL Title with NN winning it

  • Just the Facts

Couldnt wait to get back on the Young and Morgan Park bandwagons.

  • Juswatchin

Mike, Morgan Park jumped to #6 for winning the Dipper without Ayo….Beating Thornton and Leo though doesn’t make a good case…..let’s be real….The Dipper is weak!!

  • Coach M

Corliss just flying under the radar 10 wins in row George Conditt is a force no love Mike

  • Barron Von Wildcat

O’Brien I now see that you really get it when it comes to whose CONTENDERS & PRETENDERS… KEEP DOING WHAT U DO!

  • Don

Interesting ranking decisions to make. Do teams with good wins make up for their bad losses? Rita has had a great run, but losses to Providence and st Lawrence? 7 total losses and Bolingbrook was without its point guard for but 3 minutes in the Rita win. But who else? I don’t know. At the beginning of the season you thought you had a solid top 10. It is much more up in the air now. If libertyville can play with NN – the #4 slot is beatable. A few weeks ago romeoville and Bolingbrook looked like locks to stay in the top 10…4A wide open if you can stay away from S.

    • Balance the evals

Niles North has won two tournaments and defeated three top 25 teams, They are currently undefeated and were playing without one of their top players who saw action for the first time this season during the last two games of the Wheeling Hardwood Classic. Beware the Vikings are coming!!!

  • MEANSTREET NATION

Simeon looks like one of the best teams in the country !!!

  • MEANSTREET NATION

St Rita look great !!! Go Rita Go

    • Juswatchin

Obviously you wasn’t at the game!!! St.Rita won due to injury and terrible refs….. Bolingbrook would literally mop the floor with them if they ever played again!!

      • K

Are you kidding me? They looked great against Boilingbrook and even better against DePaul Prep. Thornton being out shouldn’t have stopped the rest, the Mustangs did that. Go Rita Go!

      • BBall fan

Those are excuses. I’m sorry Cochran got hurt, but if losing one player causes your team to shoot 1 for 12 in the 4Q, then you’re probably gonna keep losing. Sure you can blame the Refs for the quick fouls on Bolingbrook to start the 3Q, but the Refs called the first 5 fouls of 4Q on Rita in 3 minutes. Difference was Rita played through it and stepped up their game. Bolingbrook lost because they made 1 basket in the 4Q (plus 4 FT). Scoring 6 points in the fourth quarter isn’t gonna win a championship. Can’t blame that on the Refs.

  • PW fan

    Mr. O’Brien,

I think you do a good job covering HS hoops for an entire large metro area like Chicago. I do have some interesting questions for you though. It would be awesome if you responded as you do from time to time.

    1. How does W.Young move up after losing to unranked Lincoln Park at the time, and then needing a last second lay-up to beat #17 Hillcrest?

    2. How does Hillcrest move up 5 spots after going 2-2 @Proviso and losing to unranked Uplift by 15, without Toraze Dobbs(ejected in Orr game)?

    3. How does Brother Rice make the rankings after losing to Kenwood who is now unranked, and they took 2nd in a 2nd tier holiday tournament?

    4. How does Uplift go 3-1(3rd place) @Proviso and beat #8 Larkin by 32 and #17 Hillcrest by 15 in the process but not crack the rankings? only in-state losses: #10 Lincoln Park, #17 Evanston, and #3 Orr who may be playing better than any team except Simeon, and Uplift was without Dobbs for most of that game…couldn’t buy a rebound without him!

    5. How do you claim that Niles North is 13-0 and likely to claim the 3 spot in the rankings only to push Orr past them even though they won a 2nd tier tournament?

    6. Why isn’t Evanston ranked a bit higher? they hung tough with #4 NN, had a nice holiday showing and Lance Jones is a prime-time performer with a solid supporting cast.

season is unpredictable to say the least but based on some of your past reasoning I’m left a little confused about how you arrived at some of these teams’ slots in the rankings.

    • Michael O'Brien

One of the quick replies to most of these questions is that I don’t factor in consolation play. I’ve learned over the years that it is not really indicative of how a team will perform the rest of the season.

  • West sub fan

BTW York is garbage compared to Pontiac and Proviso west !!

  • West sub fan

I’m sorry but Fenwick does not belong in the top 10

  • Curious Cat

Bolingbrook at 9? Was it because they lost their PG Thornton in the 1st 3 minutes of the championship game against St Rita. They were up 12-2 when they lost him to what looked like a broken hand. He’s the guy that runs the ship over there. If he comes back they’ll make another deep run.

  • Curious Cat

  • Duke Carnoustie

Anyone arguing over who is No. 25 or No. 17 needs to understand that these rankings don’t really matter. What matters is ‘ships and if your team didn’t win anything this weekend, don’t argue where they are ranked. They had their chance on the court.

Having said that my Wildkits did a nice job in Centralia, where NU coach Collins and U of I coach Underwood both were last night. I had a nice time the one day I made the trip over there. Als nice to see some different teams.

Morgan Park may be the team to beat when all is said and done. This time without Ayo may make them stronger.

Libertyville having a nice season quietly. I will make it a point to watch them play. I know that coach Z is well regarded over there.

  • Juswatchin

Mike, How does Fenwick move up to 8 but have not beaten any team in the top 25? They play good and lose to good teams then blowout weak teams!!!! Can’t be 8 with no win of value!!

    • James

They beat brother rice, who had a nice run at York.

      • Juswatchin

Exactly, beating previously not ranked Brother Rice who came 2nd at York in which the highest ranked team didn’t make it to ship…. shouldn’t put you ahead of Bolingbrook at 8

    • P West fan

They beat previously ranked Larkin by 25′, lost to Orr by 3
They also lost Whitney Young by 1
They’ve shown they competitive with the best teams in the state.

  • James

Hillcrest moved up several spots by beating 2 unranked teams, losing to an unranked team and playing a highly ranked team close but losing. No argument because no one is stepping up. But i probably at least put marist ahead of them.

  • Be real

How can Whitney Young lose 2 games in 8 days and move up 2 spots?

    • Michael O'Brien

Because the last set of rankings is worthless and doesn’t matter. Every team played about four games since those, you can put them out of your mind. I’m not ranking 300 teams based on where they all were four games ago.

  • James

76 losses for teams in the top 25. After last years holiday tournament there were 43 losses in the top 25. If my quick math is right. What a difference….

  • Norm

Great job by Coach Ellis keeping Evanston competitive and exciting despite losing so much from last year’s team

    • CSL Fan

Totally agree Norm, Ellis has them playing good team ball, Jones kid can play Peters kid can play, Holden can play.

  • Simeon fan

Why Bogan not in Top 25

  • James

Good work for one crazy week. A few thoughts. I thought proviso east had a good week and deserved to stay in over a team like WWS that lost twice. Have there ever been this many losses in thr top 25?

    • Michael O'Brien

Doubtful at this stage in the season. Proviso East lost to Bogan, in my mind that was their week. Consolation action isn’t getting anyone ranked.

  • Wake Up

Net Trier was ranked before Hillcrest beat them on 12/27

  • EP

I’m super pumped about LP but how is brother rice in over loyola?

  • DB

How is Proviso East out of the top 25
They went 3-1 In the Proviso West tournament

    • Michael O'Brien

They lost to an unranked team (Bogan) and then beat three unranked teams (New Trier, Joe’s and Proviso West). That wasn’t a good enough performance to stick around. Right now Proviso East’s best win is against Willowbrook.

      • James

WWS best win was by 2 over a batavia team missing several players to football. They dont have a win as good as willowbrook or any of the teams Proviso beat at PW.

      • DB

I disagree New Trier was ranked when the tournament started Can any of teams that wasn’t ranked before the tournament beat Bogan?
