Georgia Tech hired Josh Pastner on Friday. Pastner’s move from Memphis to the Yellow Jackets had serious repercussions for Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year Charlie Moore.

Moore, who committed to Memphis in November, has reopened his recruitment according to Mac Irvin Fire club basketball coach Mike Irvin. Moore signed a National Letter of Intent with the Tigers, but according to Irvin Memphis agreed to release Moore if Pastner was no longer coach.

“Charlie’s mom insisted on that,” Irvin said.

Irvin was flooded with calls as soon as the news of Moore’s decommitment broke. Irvin talked with coaches from Wisconsin, Northwestern, DePaul, Miami and SMU on Friday.

“He just wants to go where the ball will be in his hands,” Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin said. “It doesn’t matter what conference or where. The key for him is to play.”

Moore, a 5-11 senior, was First Team All-City and Proviso West Holiday Tournament MVP this season. The four-year varsity player averaged 28 points, seven assists, five steals. He committed to Memphis in November, choosing the Tigers over California and VCU.

Moore is a good student and is now the top uncommitted point guard in the nation, so he will have plenty of options. Moore has two of his five official visits left. The spring signing period runs from April 13 to May 18.

“He’s got the grades, that is one thing Charlie definitely has,” Irvin said. “He’ll be able to go anywhere he wants. His parents just want him to make a decision that makes him happy.”
