1. Young will host the annual Chi-Town Showdown this weekend. Saturday’s schedule features Gary (Ind.) Roosevelt vs. Morgan Park and South Shore vs. Phillips at 12 p.m.; Mother McAuley vs. Kenwood and Simeon vs. Westinghouse at 1:30 p.m.; Bolingbrook vs. Trinity at 3 p.m.; Joliet Catholic vs. Fremd and C. Miller vs. Harlan at 4:30 p.m.; Young vs. Crete-Monee and North Lawndale vs. Charter School of the Dunes (Ind.) at 6 p.m. and Montini vs. Bloom at 7:30 p.m.

2. Brooks got off to a rocky start in its opener last Wednesday, falling behind at home to Simeon by as many as seven points with a minute to play in regulation. That’s when 5-10 senior Akina Wellere donned her Supergirl cape and rescued the home team, finishing with 31 points as Brooks rallied to win 66-61. “She was passing and passing and passing,” Brooks coach Reggie Dawson said. “I told her to start scoring and draw the defense to you, then start passing.”

3. Milestones: Taylor Will became the all-time leading scorer at Prospect on Friday, scoring 26 points in a 52-48 victory over Hersey. Will now has 1,374 career points, breaking the mark of 1,352 set by Colleen Grant in 1981. Meanwhile at Benet, Emily Eshoo should become the second Redwing this season to eclipse 1,000 points. Emily Schramek reached the 1,000-point plateau earlier this season. Eshoo, who is averaging 18 points per game, needs just 87 to join the 1,000-point club.
