Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Mar. 14, 2017

Simeon wins the Super-Sectional against Edwardsville at ISU in Normal IL. March 14, 2017. Worsom Robinson/ For the Sun-Times.

NORMALβ€”Sitting courtside at Redbird Arena for this edition of the notebook. A little snazzier than my apartment.

Not a great game tonight. Simeon just dominated from the start. I had to make sure I saw Mark Smith, so I had to be here. He did not deliver. Looks like things were very exciting up at the Sears Centre, wish I had seen that. Lets get to it, need to be quick tonight with the long drive home.

Tuesday’s games (every one of them…)

Young 67, Evanston 59: This became possible (a trip to state) as soon as Javon Freeman started playing like a flat out star in the second half of the season. The Dolphins have an awful lot of weapons and fit really well together. Nojel Eastern had a big night, he didn’t let his career go down without a fight.

Fremd 36, Jacobs 35 OT: The undefeated Vikings are heading to Peoria. This was vintage Fremd from start to finish. They kept the score low and hung around and pulled it out in the end. A lot of people might not agree, but I think they can give Young a game on Friday.

Bolingbrook 83, Naperville North 57: About what was expected. Bolingbrook rolls. The Raiders get Simeon on Friday and that one should be fun. Bolingbrook is actually deeper than the Wolverines. They’ll be trying to push the tempo. And remember it will be Malik Binns (formerly of Morgan Park) up against Simeon.

Bloomington 69, Marengo 46: Not a surprise here either. The Purple Raiders were impressive at Pontiac and had a fairly clear path to Peoria.

Fenwick 65, St. Viator 36: The Lions made a nice playoff run, but this was a step up in quality. Don’t be surprised if the Friars are the state champs on Saturday afternoon.

Lanphier 64, Centralia 38: I haven’t seen either one of these teams play, but Lanphier has three players nominated for the All-State team. That should be enough to give the Mustangs a game.

Morgan Park 54, Hillcrest 43: The Hawks kept it close but they just don’t have the horses the Mustangs do. Ayo Dosunmu will get a chance to sparkle on the big stage at Carver Arena.

Simeon is the better team !!! I have seen both them and Bolingbrook and Simeon is better coached and is better defensively. Bolingbrook is very good but not better than Whitney young or Simeon FAM

The Simeon vs Bolingbrook is the real championship game to me. I would have love to see a championship game between the 2. They are playing the best basketball to me. It going to be a good one.

Bolingbrook looked very good and has a good shot at winning the title. I was shocked that Naperville North came out in a man to man defense and picked up the guards early. They were outmatched and Bolingbrook just kept taking it to the hole and scoring or getting fouled. Naperville North, which does not appear to be a a great shooting team was firing up 3s from the start of the game and missed all 9 3s in the second and third quarters. Great way to get the Bolingbrook running game going. The guards were great and Binns was a beast. He was kept somewhat in check until North started pressing and he had a couple of monster slams against the press. He should be playing basketball in college not baseball. I thought the North bigs played pretty well – Johnson scored strong inside and had 4 blocks including a huge block on one of the guards. Lewis was solid but was double teamed most of the night and the Sophomore Welsh is going to be a great player. But they all needed to rebound better. North was outcoached and outhustled by a better team. Congrats to Bolingbrook.

Interesting Simeon gets ‘multiplied’ into 4A based on recent success (has a 3A level enrollment but open boundaries), while Fenwick does not (only 3 regionals in the last 4 years). Of course schools can elect to play up, but no way Fenwick is still a factor in 4A. Good luck next year…

If schools can elect to play up, why does Morgan Park stay in 3A?

      • Juswatchin

Good question… They’ve had alot of success and St.Joes came up to 4a after their last ship…. Are they ducking,,trying to keep an easier road…..Truthfully it kinda taint there success……Nick… come up, or get clowned!!!

Interesting-and I don’t think true public schools (closed boundaries) get forced up by the success factor, so he can play the coward as long as he wants. To be fair (I guess) only DeLaSalle and Marshall elect up in boys BB. At least we know who the real makers of men administrate and coach.

  • Ransford

I haven’t seen Bolingbrook play and I just saw where Mike said they are deeper than Simeon. Well that’s going to be a helluva game because Simeon goes 9 deep.

  • Ransford

Yo CB, is there a reason why you don’t want to see a Simeon Whitney championship game? Also what makes you feel that the IHSA don’t wanna see it either?
