2017 Chicago Sun-Times All-City basketball team

Young’s Lucas Williamson is the only senior on the Chicago Sun-Times 2017 All-City first team that hasn’t committed to college.

The forward is considered a tweener by college coaches. They think his skill set and size make him not exactly right for the guard or forward positions in college basketball.

Williamson will eventually find the right college fit. He’s a talented, smart, gutsy player that has been a four-year varsity contributor for the Dolphins. He also has his head on straight when it comes to his priorities. Last month Williamson was asked if he thought playing at the state finals in Peoria would help expand his college options. His answer is what high school coaches dream about, but rarely hear.

“The reason I would want to be in Peoria is to win a state championship,” Williamson said. “That’s where my mentality is at.”

The Dolphins have a shot at the Class 4A state championship, thanks to Williamson (21 pts, 5 rebounds) and third teamer Javon Freeman (13 points, 5 rebounds).

Morgan Park point guard Ayo Dosunmu (22 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists) is the only junior on the first team. He led the Mustangs to Nick Irvin’s first Red-South title and the Public League championship game. He has more than a dozen college scholarship offers.

Simeon point Evan Gilyard (16 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds) spent his season collecting hardware. The senior led the Wolverines to the Pontiac Holiday Tournament title and the city title. He’s a four-year varsity player for Simeon and the primary reason the Wolverines are the favorites to win the Class 4A state title.

Tulsa-recruit Elijah Joiner (17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) was a key member of Curie’s 2016 Class 4A state championship team. He led the Condors to the Red-Central title this season. The team fell short at Pontiac and in the city tournament, but has the talent to make a run to Peoria. Joiner’s teammates Allante Pickens (15 points, 5 assists) made the third team.

Rounding out the first team is Uplift senior Demarius Jacobs (19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists). The senior looks like a steal for SIU. He led the Titans to the Red-North title and has a knack for game-winning plays. Uplift is a serious contender for the Class 2A state title. Jacobs’ teammate Toraze Dobbs (15 points, 9 rebounds) made the third team.
