Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Feb. 6, 2017

Kenwood continues to confound me. The Broncos are loaded with talent, there is a reason I ranked them No. 2 earlier this season. I saw all those positive qualities in tonight’s win against Collins. But they also managed to pick up three technical fouls, which is the most I’ve ever seen one team get in a game. One was for a player not being in the scorebook, one for mouthing off, one for hanging on the rim.

None of it was all the egregious, but taken as a whole it makes it difficult for me to put a lot of confidence in their ability to make a deep run in the city or state tournament.

Kenwood coach Marlo Finner is one of those coaches that tells it like it is and he thinks his team has turned a corner.

“We hit a bump, most teams do during the course of the year,” Finner said. We are getting our stride and confidence back now.”

I’m heading out to see Minooka play Oswego tomorrow. The Indians are a rock solid program these days and Oswego has been playing well lately.

Monday’s top games

Young 78, Robeson 47: Instant impact for Jake Kosakowski. He’s back from injury and scored 18. Think this is his second game back. Promising soph Myles Baker scored 13 and Xavier Castaneda had 12.

Prosser 59, Vocational 57 OT: Bit of an upset here. Will Bynum had 13 for the Falcons.

Bogan 70, Lane 49: Cortez Bailey (the Morgan Park transfer) scored 20 for the Bengals. Big man Rashaun Agee had 17 and nine.

Brooks 85, Taft 77: Quentin Shields poured in 33 for Brooks.

Harlan 65, Von Steuben 62: Upset and a really big win for first year coach Walt Woghiren. Steve Alexander led the way with 18 points. Quentin Randle added 17 and DaMarcus Gilmore had nine points and 12 boards.

Orr 92, Phillips 51: The Spartans are always dangerous and even more so when Alex Flute is shooting well. Looks like he was tonight, scored 25.

Uplift 55, UP-Englewood 52: Markese Jacobs scored 17. Titans get Farragut next.

Farragut 65, Lindblom 33:Don’t pay attention to Farragut’s record. These guys can play. Kawanise Wilkins is the most underrated player in the city. He scored 25 and sophomore Aaron Strong (one of the city’s top sophs) had 20.

Westinghouse 53, Hyde Park 49: The Warriors get a big, much-needed win. Coreyoun Rushin had 14.

Simeon 74, Schurz 48: The Wolverines roll. Kezo Brown scored 21, Evan Gilyard 20, Talen Horton-Tucker 16.

Morgan Park 106, Mather 56: Ayo Dosunmu had a triple-double, 21 points, 13 rebounds and ten assists.

North Lawndale 107, DuSable 70: The Phoenix poured it on Steven Ross had 34 and Carlos Hines 30
