Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Feb. 3, 2017

Grant's John Kerr (24) and Kyle Dupree (21) are overwhelmed after taking down North Chicago. Worsom Robinson/ For the Sun-Times.

Another fun game tonight, I’m having a good week. The journey to Fox Lake was well worth it. Read all about Grant’s fourth quarter comeback win against North Chicago.

Grant big man John Kerr is averaging 20 points and 10 boards and is a legit All-Area contender. The future is bright for North Chicago, I was impressed by junior Tyrek Cooper and 6-6 sophomore Raeshaun Samoa.

I’ll be in Arlington Heights tomorrow. St. Viator hosts St. Patrick, I want to get another look at the Shamrocks.

Friday’s top games

Fenwick 56, DePaul 53: Jamal Nixon scores 24 for the Friars, they win the conference. DePaul frosh Elliot Sieger continues to impress, scored 20.

Brother Rice 55, Leo 45: Nice solid victory for the Crusaders who win the conference title.
Niles North 58, Maine South 55: My second choice game of the night, need to see both these teams. Vikings get the narrow victory.

Evanston 65, New Trier 33: Wildkits dominate the rivalry game

Notre Dame 55, Marist 43: Impressive margin of victory for the Dons, one of the more unpredictable teams in the area. Marist isn’t dealing real well with the step up in schedule over the past few weeks. Will be interesting to see if they adjust.

Bolingbrook 55, Lockport 49: This rivalry game was close. The Raiders are undefeated and I remain amazed and impressed by what the Porters are doing this season considering the talent level. Bolingbrook has a big test tomorrow night in O’Fallon.

Fremd 68, Barrington 29: Still unbeaten.

Thornton 47, Lincoln-Way West 46: Alonzo Verge (and I’ve heard a couple others) sit out for disciplinary reasons. The Wildcats survive, but this may have been the end of Verge’s POY candidacy.

Geneva 62, Batavia 52: Another good rivalry. The Vikings win and remain unbeaten. Crazy how often I’m typing that in February.

Hinsdale South 62, Willowbrook 50: The Warriors probably drop from the Super 25. I need to get out to see Hinsdale South.

I was hopeful for Willowbrook, too bad they cannot keep the run going. I don’t think Hinsdale South is really that good of a team – to lose twice to them is not a good sign. With Hinsdale Central leading the Silver and Willowbrook and Hinsdale South leading the Gold, I have to say the WSC is not really very good. A few good wins for the conference – Kenwood, Stevenson, BR. But not what you expected. Proviso, Lyons, DGS, York all major disappointments.

I heard that the Lockport team from earlier in the season is different in personnel and style of play. Recent scores seem to confirm. They could probably win the Thornwood sectional.

I haven’t seen Lockport, but the scores really confuse me. Playing Bolingbrook close they must be good. But then they get blown out by a slightly above average LWE and lose by 12 to Stagg. But if you look at all their losses, they are to teams with good records. Maybe the tough schedule will make them better. We will see…

LWE slightly above average?? Right now they are 16-9 and with any luck could be 19-6 as they lost to HF, Sandburg and Bolingbrook (all away) by a combined 12 points.

Lockport is in the LWE sectional. They will be a difficult semifinal match up in the regional for teams like Joliet Central, JW, Minooka, Oswego East, and West Aurora. Teams list will be top 7 seeds and with Lockports under .500 record they could land a dangerous 10-12 seed

Agreed it will be interesting to see some.of the seeding. Hopefully they will not just seed by record. Strength of schedule is typically overlooked.

On that same note, West Aurora’s Camron Donatlan is expected to be out at least two weeks and probably three with a bad knee sprain. Hopefully he’ll return in time for the State Tournament. They finally got both Cross twins back, Davion the night before Camron got hurt. Might have to wait until next year for another West deep run in March.

That team will have trouble without their star. They need him to come back to have any chance for an upset.

It might be time to put naperville north in top 25. They have won 10 in a row and beat Lake Park tonight they one bad loss on their schedule. Two hot teams hinsdale central and hinsdale south lost to north by 15 and 20, respectively. They also beat a pretty good evanston team.

Mike was right to take marist out of top 25. Joe was wrong. Really surprised they lost.

This might have something to do with that.

How important is Morgan Taylor to Marist’s fortunes? Have now dropped games to St. Rita & Notre Dame without him. Expected back in a week.

Good point, but at this point in the season the depth of your team factors in. If marist cannot compete without their 3rd best player, they probably need to drop. Despite my comment above i still think JC should be the first one in this week. Second new one in is Naperville north, winning against evanston after losing their starting point guard makes them worthly. In spite of a couple of losses depaul prep needs consideration. How good will they be for the next two years. Wow.
