Michael O’Brien’s notebook: Jan. 6, 2017

Thornton's Orlando Allen (15) attacks the Andrew defense, January 6, 2017 Allen Cunningham / for Chicago Sun-Times

Quick notebook tonight, need to be up early…

Dwight 84, Clifton Central 66: FOX WATCH rages on. Justin Fox had 28 points and 20 rebounds. The Trojans are 11-4.

Fremd 55, Barrington 39: The Vikings just keep rolling. Kyle Sliwa led the way with 21 points.

Loyola 51, De La Salle 35: Nice win for the Ramblers, they are 10-5 now. Might be time to check them out again.

Batavia 55, Larkin 54: Have heard very little about Batavia so far this season. Larkin was all the rage after impressing at Proviso West. The Upstate Eight River is always fun.

Hinsdale South 81, Downers Grove South 71: Major win for the Hornets. Nick Perry and Zion Griffin each scored 20. They will be a factor at the WW South MLK Tournament.

Geneva 67, St. Charles North 62: Still unbeaten. This is the best win of the season so far for the Vikings. I’ll be checking out the North Stars against St. Charles East tomorrow night.

Bloom 60, Rich South 48: Austin Richie continues to make a solid All-Area case, he had 23 points.

Joliet Central 59, Oswego East 38: Surprised by this score line, Oswego East has had a nice season. The Steelmen get it done at home.

St. Patrick 73, IC Prep 53: Jalen Nelson led the Shamrocks with 23 points.

St. Laurence 58, St. Rita 55: Upset. Brian Lyle stole the ball, scored and took a charge – all in the last minute of the game. He finished with 12 points. Justin Wierzgac led all scorers with 21 points and had 4 rebounds.

Homewood-Flossmoor 49, Lockport 40: The Porters actually led for most of the game, they are one scrappy bunch.

Heard St. Pats plays Orr on MLK day? Is that true?

    • Michael O'Brien

Appears to be true. I didn’t know anything about it until about an hour ago. Allegedly at 4 p.m.

One final comment to Reality Check, which , I believe is none other than Michael O’brien. A natural rivalry would be Fenwick and St. Pat’s , but unfortunately, Fenwick decided to cancel the series with St. Pat’s . They said they had a schedule conflict. That was baloney. St. Pat’s had beaten Fenwick on their home court before a home crowd that included potential students for Fenwick. It backfired on Fenwick when St. Pat’s beat them on that court. The next year Fenwick had a “schedule conflict” and broke their contract with St. Pat’s when they were supposed to play on the Shamrock’s home court. Enough of the game playing with these schools. St. Pat’s has been in business for 155 years and is still going strong. Building students with character, integrity and educating young men is the school’s primary mission and they are doing it well. Sports teach kids discipline, integrity and commitment only when the educational segments is at the top of the list. For many of these school, education is at the bottom of their priorities and the media put the focus on the minority of the athletes as the school fail the majority with poor education. It has to stop, now.

Phil, I clearly post as myself on here. Please stop dragging my name into your St. Pat’s discussions or I won’t approve your comments anymore.

I am starting to think Reality Check in none other than Michael O’Brien himself…really !

What teams play the toughest non-con schedule other than Curie, Simeon and the other prep school programs?? Benet? HF? Just asking…not questioning anyone. Thanks…

The main reason for going to high school is for an education, not for playing basketball. The travelling and emphasis on basketball is way out of hand in the public league. Spend as much time studying as these kids spend on shooting hoops and we would have a better situation in Englewood, Gresham, South Chicago, Lawndale, Austin and Garfield Park. Really.

  • Coach

Tai Bibbs is a great basketball player. He reminds me of Lavell Boone from Romeoville who played at Judson University but a better skill set.

  • mikenike

West Aurora 57, West Chicago 51. Donatlan 15 pts and a phenomenal 4th q. Tai Bibbs 35 pts! Also asks out of his Drake commitment.

Tai Bibbs would be great at DePaul university or Ball State university. I believe he could start at either school day one.

Because DeLaSalle, Laurence and Conant are cupcake OOC games? Plus, this is Pat’s first year in 4A…would it been better for you the past few seasons when it would have only been a one class difference? There aren’t any nights off in the ESCC…grind the ax somewhere else.

    • RealityCheck

DeLaSalle and Conant were tournament games and Laurence is terrible. I’m not saying Pats doesn’t have talent- They do, but come on look at the schedule they have played so far. Teams like Benet, ND, and Marist play much tougher nonconference schedules. Let’s see what happens when Benet play Pats on Friday. My prediction is Benet by 9pts. I’ll be back on here to remind you of my prediction then.
By the way my name is Don. Gentleman and scholar.

      • Shamrocks

Pat’s plays Conant in a few weeks, scheduled OOC, in addition to the Tosh game. If you’re going to criticize competition you should actually look at the schedule. And nobody is trying to comparing schedules and nobody is asking for predictions. Just responding to your original post and commented why I think Pat’s schedule is as balanced as any other school. Some easier games, some tough matchups.

Btw, though, of you want to throw other schools with “tougher” schedules, please tell us the tough games on this schedule: http://il.8to18.com/marist/schedule/basketball/b/v/2016-2017.

And not criticizing Marist as Coach Nolan is a fantastic coach. Just pointing out the flaw in your argument.

      • P Wayne

You are full of baloney, whoever you are, for the most part, St. Pat’s has consistently had tough schedules, from year to year. When games are scheduled, you don’t really know if that team is going to be good, average or mediocre. Half the season are with ESCC Teams and anyone can expect bumps in the road because of the competitiveness of the Conference. This Shamrock team is talented and they will be in the race all the way. They have a lot of young talent and the more they play, the better they will be.

Another win for Bailey and his 4A squad over a tiny 2A school. You know what happens when you have a coach who values his personal win total over playoff preparedness?
Only 2 Sectional championships in 21 years. Does that sound Hall of Fame worthy?

    • P Wayne

First, put your name on your post. If you are talking about Coach Bailey at St. Pat’s…You must be from Fenwick or Notre Dame….the opposition. St. Pat’s , the second half of the season, plays, undefeated Marist, Benet, Notre Dame, Conant, Loyola Academy, Marian Catholic , which is plenty of preparation for the state tournament.
